Transport Container
If you are relocating from South Africa to an overseas country such as Australia or the United States of America and you wish to take your furniture and other belongings with you, the transport company you use is going to have to pack everything into wooden crates, which in turn are packed into a transport container. There are a few things that you will need to know before packing day comes along. Containers come in two sizes 20’ and 40’ (6m and 12m). There is a big difference in the cost of the two that is roughly proportional to the size. You will have to have the goods you are intending to relocate appraised by one of our representatives so that you know which size of transport container you will need.
The cost of a transport container can vary immensely from one day to another as it depends on the exchange rate (shipping charges are in US $) and also on the ever-changing price of fuel oil. For example, the recent slump in the Rand against the dollar put the price of a 20’ transport container from South Africa to America’s East coast up from R70,000 to R100,000 overnight. Our representative will also be able to advise you on what you cannot relocate by this means. For example, you can forget about packing all of that uneaten food in the pantry – even if it is all in cans – start eating it all now – you cannot take it into Australia or the States. Our representative can give you a breakdown of what items you may or may not send overseas.
