• Always hire a professional company – they know the system and you’re less likely to end up disappointed.
• Book the removal company as early as is feasible to avoid disappointment.
• Have any long distance move covered by insurance
• If you have any beds or other furniture that dismantles – dismantle it before the removal company arrives
• If you’re packing a truck yourself, always put the most valuable at the back and the heaviest at the bottom
• Always check out the references of a moving company before you engage them – whole loads of furniture have been known to “disappear”
• Get rid of any items you don’t need by holding a garage sale before you move
• Pack a separate box with essential things you may need when you get to your destination (loo paper, tea, coffee, paper plates, a kettle) and take it in the car with you.
• Mark all your boxes with what’s in them, and keep an inventory of them
• Notify all essential people and businesses of your change of address
• Cancel electricity, municipal rates etc and collect any deposits.
