Logistics Company
The Oxford English dictionary defines logistics as: “The branch of military science having to do with procuring, maintaining and transporting material, personnel and facilities”. A logistics company is one that manages the flow of goods from one place to another, and a furniture removals and storage company, particularly when warehousing a load of personal belongings then shipping them by container or truck from one location to another is nothing less than a specialised logistics company. If you plan to relocate overseas you should start obtaining quotations as early as you can. Containers are very expensive when hiring for long distances, and the cost depends on two things – the Rand:Dollar exchange rate and the current world oil price. The recent massive increase in the price of oil and change in the exchange rate saw the cost of a container to the East coast of the United States increase by more than 50% overnight.
The prices charged by a logistics company are directly linked to these two variables, and because of this quotes could change dramatically from the original one. Once you have been quoted on such a move by a logistics company it is a good idea to keep a constant eye on these two rates, and whenever you see a significant change to contact them to either get a new quote or to have the original one confirmed. The price of a container could also determine whether you wish to take all of your furniture with you or to sell it and replace it once you have arrived at your destination. There are obviously some things that you will always wish to relocate, items such as kitchenware, crockery, cutlery, linen and books, but do you really need to take that old settee?
