Planning Your Move

Moving house is a scary and exhausting process. Luckily we have some tips for planning your move that should help the whole process go much more smoothly. Here is what you can do:

Please remember we need the following in order to give you one of our free Quotations:

  • Quotes are based on the Volume, Distance and Date of Removal.
  • A Full and Detailed List of all your Household Items (remember the loose stuff, attic, garage and basements).

Ensure trucks bigger than 3-tons are allowed in complexes:

  • Truck Heights are 4.3m – Please Check for arches, narrow gates, low hanging tree branches, panhandles, availability of lifts or anything that might cause a restriction to the trucks.
  • Additional costs will apply for Shuttle with bakkies when furniture needs to be carried more than 50m.
  • Confirm your Removal Date and book your Move with Active furniture removals.
  • Check with your insurance agent to ensure you\’ll be covered through your homeowner\’s policy during the move
  • If a company or department is relocating you, find out what portion of your moving expenses will be paid by them…
  • Fill out a change of address form on all correspondence and relevant utility services (electric, newspaper, subscription, telephone companies, post office, bank statements and SARS)
  • Plan a Simple Record Keeping System and if possible, take pictures or video tape your belongings.
  • Record serial numbers of electronic equipment and prepare appliances for moving.
  • Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in wrappings for the move.
  • Get rid of all junk, unworn clothes and all other unused items.
  • Have plenty of supplies for your packing: boxes, pen, unprinted newspaper, buff tape, bubble wrap, double plastic sheets, etc.
  • Start using up Food Items, so that there is less to spoil and pack.
  • Make arrangements for transporting your pets.

One week before moving

  • Arrange for help on the moving day. Plan ahead for the special needs of infants and pets.
  • Dismantle large or any furniture that you are able to. This will not only make moving the items easier, but will greatly reduce the risk of damage and breakage to your furniture during the move.
  • Doors may be secured with rubber straps or strings.
  • Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes.
  • Label cables and tighten transit screws. If removing screws, tape them to the objects they are removed from. Use wardrobe cartons for bulky Light-weighted bedding like comforters, pillows and blankets, as well as clothes that must remain hanging! Remember we have to lift them so don’t overfill or make them to heavy.
  • Designate a colour for each room in the new house and mark each room door accordingly, apply matching stickers to the boxes (green for kitchen, pink for bedroom, etc.)
  • Pack medicines in a leak proof container. Ensure all Fridges, Cupboards, Cabinets, Drawers, Shelves and Garages are emptied.
  • Mark clearly all that isn’t going to be moved and separate it from the rest.

On the day of moving

  • Safeguard all firearms, money, jewellery and other valuables before the arrival of the movers.
  • Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odours.
  • Disconnect all electrical appliances and make sure they are prepared for removal.
  • Safeguard the drums of your Washing Machine and Tumble Dryer.
  • Show the Furniture Removal Team everything that has to be moved.
  • Stand back and allow our workers to do their job, they have the know-how to do it quickly and efficiently.
  • Double check closets, drawers, shelves, attic and garage to be sure they are empty.
  • Watch loading and offloading of your goods and examine all items carefully.
