Transport ContainersIntercontinental relocation inevitably involves the use of transport containers in which to pack your furniture and belongings. This does not, as some people would believe, involve dropping off a container at your premises and having you pack it yourself. Let us put that story to bed and tell it as it really is. If you are relocating from South Africa to, say, the United States America, you would first need to obtain a quote or even several quotes, and this would mean the transport company handling your possessions sending a representative to your place of abode to assess the size of container you would need. Transport containers come in two standard sizes – 20’ and 40’ – and the difference in cost is considerable. When utilizing transport containers, at the appropriate time we would send a truck and crew to your home and we would pack everything small enough such as clothes, books, linen, kitchen-ware and so on into special cardboard boxes. These, together with any furniture you are taking, are then transported to our warehouse where everything is crated in wooden crates. When ready for onward transporting these are then packed into a container at our warehouse. It is then sealed and taken to the nearest appropriate container depot where it sits with hundreds of other transport containers for onward shipping to the nearest port to your destination, say Wilmington in North Carolina. Here the container must clear Customs before being transported by road to the address of destination, where the wooden crates are unpacked. Because this mode of transport is so expensive you should always determine beforehand whether it is actually worth your while taking certain pieces of furniture with you. Depending on the article of course, it may be to your advantage to sell the piece and purchase it afresh in the States. |
